Anyone? Anyone?

I didn't forget about you!
The main logic board, a.k.a. the motherboard, in my Macbook failed last week, but now it's back and so am I with posting. The blog header format was on here too, so Chris will be working his design magic on that soon too.
I need to get some of the latest photos organized and then you'll be seeing more of our little fammy.

Quick updates:

-Ajay had his (7th) tooth cut through on his birthday and is about to cut his 8th any day

-Chris is gearing up for this year's outdoor festival season. We'll be posting his "doodle fest" calendar here so you can come out and support Save The Doodle, his caricature drawing business

-I have been practicing piano every day and am in the perfecting stages on George Winston's "Longing."

-Ajay "talks" all the time. His main convo goes like this, "Hah-tee! Thhh! Ah-choo! Bbrbbrrbb! Ffffff! Vvvvvv! Ladle ladle ladle. Hah-tee! Rrrrrr-bih! Aaahhh!"

-Chris and his colleague are about to launch our midwife's new website. Our homebirth story and photos will be part of it!

-I started spring cleaning this year with the motto, "Give it all away." Who wants some?

Watching for Spring

I love Springtime
With birds singing joyfully as all the snow melts
And the gentle rain prepares the ground for new growth.
Spring will always remind me of the anticipation of Ajay's birth
Which has watered me to grow personally.

We are on the cusp of one of my favorite seasons.
Soon we will be opening up all of the windows
To let the fresh air rush in.
The non-existant curtains will get a good washing.
The ceiling fans will be in full spin.
There will be much sprucing up of the yard.
There is a lot to look for and to look forward to.

My heart is full knowing that, this Spring,
The three of us will be enjoying it together.
Even "Kitty Cat" is getting in on the action!

Holiday Hoorah

Who knew the season would be more challenging on Chris and me than any of the years before?
Okay, okay, I can almost hear the guffaws of laughter coming from all of you readers with chicos/kiddos/little ones.
The joke was certainly on us for thinking otherwise!
This year, the parties were not about visiting so much.
They were about strategic planning of arrivals and departures in order to have the most enjoyable time as a family.
All that careful planning went straight out the window
since our Little Mister is going through
some not-so-outward changes and it's making him outwardly frazzled.

"They're lying! I am perfectly peaceful, people!
Oh, and by the way, present bows are AWESOME!
They are plastic, after all.
And don't listen to my mom and dad. They're cranky and need a nap."
(He didn't even make notice of the bow on his head. I think baldies appreciate just about anything to cover their cabezas.)
So, it's been a busy-fulll few weeks and, I must say, I am thankful it has wrapped up!
Between Ajay working on cutting another tooth and being on the verge of walking,
there has been an upheaval in his napping routine.
All of you friends and family witnessed an unfamiliar Ajay.
Not to fret, though. He's worked out a few growing pains and is taking "regular" naps again and
is behaving in his peaceful, chill-baby manner ;-)
(Please check back here soon for a more detailed Ajay-update.)

Christmas Day was all planned out to spend with my "second family."
So Chris and I had our first family Christmas together on Friday, Christmas Eve,
shortly after Little Mister went to sleep for the night.

We got BIG gifts for each other this year:
For her: A Gorgeous-Giant-Grunty-Bunty-Boy!!! Framed!

For Him: A whole mouthful of Romolo's sponge candy!!!

...He said this didn't hurt... yikes.

You know, my favorite of all Chris' gifts to me is my brand new 4th generation, 32 gig iPod Touch.
It's got a built-in camera and HD video camera.
Chris says his favorite gift of all that came from me is his black and grey plaid,
Merino wool winter coat.
Each of us agree that those were the most fun to give to each other.

Our favorite gift that Ajay received is
a push toy walker that also converts to a pull toy wagon
from Chris' parents (Grandma and Paps).
Thanks guys!

What was your favorite gift to give and favorite one to receive?

So, Christmas Day was lovely with my "second family," Pastor Jim and Pam (Poppy and Nana).
They have always been my close friends and loving mentors.
So, in all the meanings of the word, we are family.
We were really blessed to be able to spend time with all of the Dumont's, but had to leave too soon.
A continuation is in the plans this week, but nonetheless,
we were still blessed with a few fun things for Ajay to enjoy.

When we first arrived there, Ajay went on an adventure!
"I will conquer this fire by carefully scaling the hearth. Next, I will shimmy across the chaise. Then a strategic dismount and I'm off to inspect all the wrappings and unwrappings!"
"Nana & Poppy's place has proven to be perfect grounds for this Little Explorer!"

Later, we took a break to break the binding of a cool board-book for the boy who loves a good story.
"Remember, Ajay, books are for reading, not eating..."

"Hey! What's that?!"
"Look mom! There's a baby on here!"
After much shaking, flipping, and crawling over,
Ajay settled in to closely examine the box with a picture of a baby.
(I love this one with Chris in the background drawing on the doodle pad!)
"Don't you know that the gift boxes and wrapping paper are the most important part
of a baby's first Christmas? Well, if you didn't, now you do."
;-)

On Sunday, after church and Ajay's one and a half hour nap,
we had another party at my mom and step-dad's (Granny and Grandpa)
with approximately 900 people attending.
Well, maybe it was just 30 people or so,
but it was still pretty chaotic even without tending to a fussy baby!
Personally, I could have done better with my attitude in handling Ajay,
so I'm sorry to all who saw my frustrated face
instead of my "this isn't bothering me" face :-D

Christmas Weekend + Growing Baby + Tired Momma = Wit's End

(We don't have any photos on our camera for this party,
although the ones I saw turned out well.
We'll have to get those from you, Granny)

For the finale of our Christmas festivities, we went to Chris' parent's home
(postponed until Grandma was feeling better).
It was truly a blessing watching (sister and brother in laws) Stephanie and Thoai's children show such genuine love and interest in Ajay's well-being and entertainment!
Temple, London, and baby Anne called for him and crawled around with him.
They showed him different objects to calm him and gave lots of pats on the head.
They even rough-housed with him.
We were enjoying these precious moments so much that we only took a couple photographs.
What a blessed time we had on New Year's Day with them all too.
Again, Ajay was greeted with warm, loving affection,
especially from Anne, who held his face in hands and pulled him in for a couple baby kisses.
We will always treasure that moment!
Thank you to all for your generosity to our family this year!
Blessings of Joy in 2011 to you all!

Mister Mom

Our 3 bunnies have been temporarily housed in my sister and brother in law's basement for the last year. We feed them fresh veggies twice a day every day. Traveling back and forth together or separately has been simple, if not easy. Now it's a bit more challenging trying to coordinate the outing. We now have the questions do you want to go feed the bunnies or should all 3 of us go together? The latter is becoming the regular lately, except for yesterday. Ajay was sleeping with a warm belly full of milk and Chris was diligently working on a few projects, so I volunteered to go feed the bunnies.

After I fed the girls, I sat in Bree's living room and zoned out a bit, then played Origami spaceship with Evan for a few minutes, and chatted with Bree about gardening for a while. About an hour later, I came to my senses (thanks to my super-efficient mammary glands) and decided to head back home. Of all the times to leave my cell phone at home, this was not it.

Upon opening the door to our apartment, I was greeted with a huge smile from my Mister-mom and he said,

"He's been nursing my arm for about 15 minutes."

I was speechless and thankful and, again, jealous, but so glad Chris was able to comfort Ajay until I came home.
Chris is so proud of his baby-hickey on his right bicep. Well, done, Mister!

Mister Devoted

He does it all...

He cooks the meals, he serves them where I am (usually in our bedroom),
and he cleans up all the dishes...
He's affectionate, passionate, and an adoring dad to Ajay,
always willing to hold him, bounce him,
and sing funny made-up songs to him with all the instruments in perfect melody
(Ajay especially loves the "Kingdom of the Dinosaurs" theme).

Thank you, to my irreplaceable, irresistible, and compassionate husband, Mister, for all you have done and are doing for our family!
There is no one like you!

Ajay's Home Birth Story

For me, there was more to bearing fruit than just finding out I was pregnant
and then changing all my bad habits into good ones.
It was a matter of maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle to ensure the best physical conditions for pregnancy, which, you all know, happens without planning.

Think of a healthy pregnancy as a gardener would his garden.
Sow a seed into the highest quality soil for the best harvest.

(photo taken at 12-1/2 weeks)

During the earliest weeks of pregnancy,
we made a decision based upon the experiences and words of encouragement
from a supportive group of women and mothers
to make a commitment to having the peaceful and intimate experience
of a natural (unmedicated) home-birth.

One friend said, “Whatever floats your boat. That's brave.”
(It does float our boat!)
To us, it was not just a matter of courage,
but of a solid trust in the design of the female body
to be able to perform such a mind-blowing physiological phenomenon
without medical intervention/instruction/interference.
I am proud to say I had a peaceful, trouble-free,
deeply gratifying labor and birth.
I was able to labor at my own pace, in the position of my choice, and trust my body to do what it was designed to do.

Chris and I made a birthing plan once we devoted ourselves to have a home-birth
We were believing God for every detail,
even for the pleasant weather we received on the birth day.

In our story, we were sure that we wanted a water-birth because it would be the most secure way for our baby to transition from womb to world.

(next two photos taken at 41 weeks, in stage one labor, on our patio)
After a couple of hours, I felt it was time to go upstairs to our bedroom,
where I chose to continue laboring at my bedside.
My midwife arrived shortly thereafter.
She was there to give me encouragement and to soothe me through each abdominal rush (contractions seem to say the opposite of what my body was actually doing--opening up).

It was time to get some pressure of my basketball, I mean my belly, so into the pool I went!
The rushes, the meditative groaning,
and the deep breathing followed for a [fast] hour and a half
until I felt the urge to push.
I looked up from my zone and said,
"When can I push?"
Jen replied softly,
"If you need to push, push!"

What peace!
I knew exactly how hard and how long to push down.
I felt a burst of water and then the rushes were coming strong and steady!
Bring on Stage 3, Homies!

Although I asked for direction, I was following my body's cues and signals.
There was no one “telling” me what to do.

It went something like this:
Urge to push...
Push down with support from Chris
(yes he was in that pool with me ready to catch!)...
Breath in deep and out completely...
Then hang over the pool's edge
While letting go of every last sensational rush.
The moving down of our baby into the birth canal
and the crowning of the baby's head
was the fastest most empowering part of labor.
I felt each motion and was falling in love.

I was so excited for the next rush because I knew it was the final push to birth our little "Mo."
Then it came! The little slippery-seal body floated away and up into his daddy's arms.
He lay there in Chris’ embrace with eyes open and alert,
almost as if to be ready to speak.
He only made a couple cooing sounds for his first, "Hello."

I turned to see my gleaming husband. A sight unforgettable.
We saw that our baby was a boy and named him Ajay Zane.

Umbilical cord still attached,
Ajay made his way into my arms for our first embrace.
His skin was still milky with vernix,
(the lotion-like moisturizer that should be left on the baby’s skin, not washed off).
He did not have his nose and throat suctioned
or have any salve wiped into his eyes.
It's no wonder he didn’t wale and cry.
Skin to skin contact is all that he needed.

“We did it! Our baby is here and he’s healthy and handsome!"
After about five minutes,
the cord finished sending the vital blood it carried for nine months into Ajay’s body.
Chris cut the cord (Go, Mister!!) and Ajay was now independent of the placenta.
I suckled him at my chest to encourage one last rush for the placenta to be delivered.

Once that was free,
Chris and I moved to our bed,
where we watched Ajay take to my breast and nurse.
Let me tell you, I was ever ready for this moment
and the years of breastfeeding to follow.
(I had been offering to nurse my friends' babies since I started lactating on week 19...).

We reveled in this completion of the reproductive cycle.
Frankly, it was pure awesomeness.
Our midwife and doula quietly cleaned up the pool setup
while our little family enjoyed our first hour together
in our own bedroom in our own home.
We will cherish those moments forever.

If you're asking yourself where all the "ouchies" and "boo-boo's" in this story are,
there wasn't a single one to speak of.
I'm positive that me soaking in hot water for an hour helped immensely and also
being hands-on for the birth allowed me to work with my body
and make way for the baby's little noggin during each laborious push.
Talk about bonding and totally amazing.

My midwife said that I might feel a little burning for a moment when Ajay's head crowned. There was a slight burn, but again, I added a bit of pressure and that was the end of that. (maybe 5 seconds of burning and then the baby's head was born. Some mom's have been cut down there to "make room" for the head. YIKES!)
Our baby's head was born in about 30 minutes or about 12 pushes.

Some of you have asked how long my labor was.
I'm so glad it was all day working up to the intense stages of labor.
So my total "true" labor was about 6 hours from patio to pool.
(Telling our family the news!)

Peacefully chilling after being measured:
8 pounds 4 ounces, 21-1/2 inches long, and 14 cm head circumference
Only one hour old and already so much to think about.

I did absolutely no "prenatal care" or doctor visits, and no sonograms either.
In fact, I was 25 weeks pregnant before I ever found my midwife (info at bottom of message).

My care consisted of a couple mandatory PH tests (pee on the strip) to check protein and other levels,
blood pressure checks every so often,
and, of course, I wanted to hear the baby's heart beat every single visit with the doppler.
He had a little techno-beat going for us!

As for the medical stuff that my midwife was "required" to offer us as our "right",

it was an emphatic "No thanks" to the vaccines

(all of them, especially Hep C which is primarily found in IV-drug users)

and "Not for us" to PKU testing (scrape the heel) and Vitamin K shots,

and a "No way" to the eye goopy-junk (that is for people with STD's and is a known carcinogen!).

Other than that, I just got to hang out and talk with my midwife about what I thought labor and birth would be like. We bonded like sisters. She was/is a blessing to us!
